The 1993 stop-motion animated film The Nightmare Before Christmas, produced by Disney, has become a timeless classic. Directed by Henry Selick and heavily influenced by Tim Burton's distinctive gothic style, the film blends elements of fantasy and musical theater to tell a story that bridges Halloween and Christmas. For many, it holds a nostalgic place in childhood memories, with its iconic soundtrack featuring songs like "This Is Halloween" and "Opening" that have become beloved musical staples.
It‘s thrilled that LEGO has managed to recreate the dark yet whimsical style of The Nightmare Before Christmas. The LEGO set perfectly captures the essence of this style through iconic elements like Spiral Hill, Halloween Town's City Hall, and Jack Skellington's house. However, designing a light kit for this set posed a significant challenge. At BrickBling, we aimed to illuminate The Nightmare Before Christmas while preserving some of its darker, eerie elements. For more insights, let’s hear from Levi and Scarlett, the designers behind the light kit, in an exclusive interview where they share their creative process and design details.
"To be honest, the first time I watched The Nightmare Before Christmas as a child, I was terrified—I even had nightmares afterward," says Levi, the designer behind the LEGO set’s light kit. Levi, who has designed multiple Disney-themed lighting kits in the past, took inspiration from his personal experience with the movie, combining nostalgia with creativity to enhance the eerie atmosphere of the set.
"When designing the lighting set for The Nightmare Before Christmas, I found this movie again and watched it. Although I have seen it many times, this time I paid more attention to the architectural style and the atmosphere presented by the movie screen." Levi told us that Gothic architecture and magical style are the characteristics of this movie, so when creating this Lego set lighting, this style must be perfectly presented. In addition, although this movie has some horror elements, the most important elements are Halloween and Christmas, and the festive atmosphere needs to be created through lighting.
Scarlett also added for us: "The emotions of the characters in the movie are particularly important. We need to use lighting to create a romantic scene for Jack and Sally"
The film, featuring claymation characters, is beloved for its unique art style, catchy music, and creative character designs. BrickBling has created a beautiful light set for this LEGO set, perfect for a Halloween or Christmas (or both!) display. We’re excited to bring the charm of brick-made lights to this collection, and let you bring a little bit of Halloweentown into your own home.
